Cortes Becomes First Latina to Serve on Township’s Governing Board
EDISON — The Middlesex County Democratic Organization Chairman Kevin McCabe and Vice-Chair Beatrice Moskowitz today congratulated Claribel Cortes on her appointment to the North Brunswick Township Council. Cortes became the first Latina to serve on the township Council when she was sworn in to fill an unexpired term left vacant by the death of longtime Councilmember Bob Corbin.
“I have known Claribel for years in both a personal and professional capacity and Beatrice and I have all the confidence in the world that she will be a tireless advocate for North Brunswick’s families,” said McCabe. “Even as we mourn the passing of Bob Corbin, we know that North Brunswick’s future is in excellent hands because of Claribel’s tireless work ethic and dedication to her community.”
Cortes, a sixteen-year North Brunswick resident, is an award-winning entrepreneur and community leader with more than two decades of experience in the digital media and broadcast space. She established herself as an innovative media specialist while working for Fox News, where she covered numerous historical events such as 9/11, The Iraq war, and numerous presidential elections. She worked for ABC News and on various documentaries, including the Oscar award-winning film “An Inconvenient Truth” and Spike Lee’s Emmy award-winning Film “When the Levees Broke.” She was recruited by Independent Television News (ITN Source) to expand their North and Latin American offices and worked for the Associated Press, where she launched multiple international campaigns and became the first Latina Director in the company’s 170-year history. During her tenure, Claribel also established the very first Content Development/Documentary division within AP, which has now established programming with broadcasters such as A&E, National Geographic, and Netflix. In 2017, Cortes founded The Setroc Group, where she currently serves as president.
Cortes currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of NJ. She is also a member of the National Association of Professional Women (NAPW), National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE), and National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP).
Cortes, who served on the North Brunswick Board of Education for three years, will fill the remainder of Corbin’s term, which expires at the end of the current year. She will run in the November General Election for a new three-year term.
