Democrat named to replace Bob Corbin

Claribel Cortes has become the first Latina to serve on the North Brunswick Township Council after being appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the death of veteran Councilman Robert Corbin on March 15.
Cortes, a school board member, was appointed on April 9 after the local Democratic organization submitted her and two others – Lorraine Gagliano and Concetta Adamo – to the governing body as candidates to fill the vacancy.
His resignation from the school board creates a vacancy that will be filled by appointment by sometime next month.
She will run in a November special election for a three-year term.
Cortes’ appointment was praised by Middlesex County Democratic Chairman Kevin McCabe and Vice-Chair Beatrice Moskowitz.
“I have known Claribel for years in both a personal and professional capacity and Beatrice and I have all the confidence in the world that she will be a tireless advocate for North Brunswick’s families,” said McCabe. “Even as we mourn the passing of Bob Corbin, we know that North Brunswick’s future is in excellent hands because of Claribel’s tireless work ethic and dedication to her community.”
The vice-chair of the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey, Cortes covered 9/11 and the Iraq War for Fox news and worked for ABC New on several documentaries.
The 75-year-old Corbin, a former assistant Middlesex County prosecutor, had served on the council for 18 years.
